The Experience

I was already fumbling with the paddle when a guy named Mike (I think? Or maybe Mark — I’m terrible with names) handed me a sun hat and grinned, “You’ll want this.” The air at Willow Beach had that early-morning coolness, but you could smell the river warming up. No guides, just a quick safety talk and a reminder about the online waiver (“Don’t forget it or you’re not getting in,” he joked). Then suddenly it was just us, the kayaks, and this wide stretch of Colorado River that looked way greener than I expected.

The first few strokes felt awkward — my arms always forget what they’re supposed to do. But after five minutes or so, we found a rhythm, gliding between these dark canyon walls that made everything echo. You hear birds you can’t see and sometimes catch a flash of fish under the surface. There were other paddlers farther ahead but mostly it was quiet except for our paddles and the weird squeak my friend’s life vest made every time she shifted. We stopped once to dip our hands in — cold enough to wake you up fast.

Getting to Emerald Cave took less time than I thought (maybe an hour?), even with us drifting off course once because I got distracted by some wildflowers growing out of a rock crack. Inside, the light does this thing where everything glows green around you — it’s hard to explain unless you see it. We floated there for a bit, not talking much. It felt private somehow even though we knew other people would show up soon. Heading back was slower; arms tired, sun higher now, but honestly I didn’t mind dragging it out.
