The experience

The drive from Tooele to the Onaqui HMA takes about 45 minutes, crossing the historic Pony Express Trail down into Skull Valley. Along the way you stop briefly for photographs at points of interest before reaching the range where the herd, around 450 wild horses, grazes, rests and moves between watering holes. Where the horses are located determines how much walking is involved, so close-toed shoes are required and layering is recommended.

Once in the field, you spend approximately 3.5 hours with one or more bands of the herd. A guide who has documented these horses for over 3,000 hours works with you one-on-one to improve your technical skills and teach you how to anticipate and capture strong images. You learn the horses' names, their family structures, how to read their behavior and what to watch for in a moment before it happens. The guide shares what they've learned from years of observation so you can photograph not just what you see, but what you understand.

You're transported in a 4x4 luxury SUV, and the tour accommodates up to three guests traveling together. Bring your own camera or cell phone: no external lighting or drones are permitted. After the tour ends, you receive complementary digital images of yourself with the wild horses. Bottled water and an air-conditioned vehicle are included. Minimum age is 10 years old.
