Step-by-step itinerary
Stargazing at Capitol Reef National Park
- Arrive at Capitol Reef National Park
- Experience dark sky tour of the Universe
- Optional: Take professional Milky Way portraits
The Experience
Capitol Reef National Park sits in one of Utah's darkest corners, far enough from city lights that the Milky Way rises clearly overhead. You'll spend an hour at an iconic landscape within or near the park where a live guide walks you through what you're seeing: constellations, planets, star clusters, the structure of the galaxy itself. The guide speaks English, Italian or Russian, so you get the same experience in your own language.
The stargazing itself is the core of the activity: you stand in the dark, look up, and learn to read what's there. If you want to take something home beyond memory, you can add professional portraits. The photographer frames you against the night sky with the Milky Way and the landscape surrounding you. You choose how many photos you'd like when you book. They're delivered digitally. The stargazing-only option is also available if you'd rather skip the portraits and focus on the sky itself.
Pickup is included in the booking, so you don't arrange your own transport to the site. Plan for the activity to run about an hour from start to finish.
What’s included
- One-hour stargazing activity with a live guide.
- pickup to the site.
- digital portrait photos if you choose the Stars/Milky Way portrait option.

What's the Milky Way like when you see it from Capitol Reef?
Capitol Reef National Park sits in one of Utah's darkest sky zones, so the Milky Way rises clearly overhead instead of as a faint smudge. The guide points out the structure of the galaxy, constellations, and deep-sky objects you'd miss without someone reading the sky for you.
Do I get prints of the portrait photos, or just digital files?
The portraits are delivered as digital files. Prints are not included in the booking.
Can I do stargazing without adding the portrait photos?
Yes. You can choose the stargazing-only option when you book, which covers the one-hour experience with the guide and skips the professional photography.
What languages does the guide speak?
The guide is available in English, Italian, or Russian, so you can book in whichever language you prefer.
