The Experience

First thing that happened in White Salmon: I fumbled with my wetsuit and one of the guides—Sam, I think—just grinned and handed me a helmet, saying, “Don’t worry, everyone looks goofy at first.” It broke the ice. The outpost smelled faintly of river mud and pine needles, and there was this low hum from the other rafters—some nervous laughter, someone dropping a paddle. We met our guide Li by the gear shed; she asked if anyone had rafted before. I shook my head but felt weirdly calm after her quick safety talk (she’s done this hundreds of times). The river itself looked colder than I expected—kind of blue-green, almost milky from all that glacial melt off Mt. Adams.

Pushing off was like jumping into a different world. The first splash hit my face and honestly? It was so cold it made me laugh out loud. The water moves fast here—8.5 miles goes by in a blur of shouting and paddling and trying to remember which way is left or right when Li yells it over the roar. At one point we floated through these collapsed lava tubes—dark stone walls streaked with moss, echoing with our voices. There’s this earthy smell mixed with something sharp from the volcanic rock. Sunlight kept flickering between the trees overhead, but sometimes you’d get this sudden chill as we dipped under a ledge or around a bend.

I didn’t expect Husum Falls to look so… vertical? Li gave us the option to run it or walk around—I said yes before thinking too hard about it. My heart was pounding so loud I barely heard her count us down. We dropped over and for half a second everything went quiet except for my own yell (which probably sounded ridiculous). When we surfaced everyone was grinning like idiots—even the guy who lost his shoe. Afterward we changed into dry clothes back at the outpost; my hands still tingled from gripping the paddle so tight.

Sitting under those tall Pacific Northwest trees later, eating whatever snacks we’d packed, I kept replaying that moment at the falls in my head. There’s something about being tossed around by real wild water—with people you just met—that sticks with you longer than you expect.
