The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the flower lei felt cool against my neck—kind of ticklish, actually. Anyway, it tasted better than any hotel bar cocktail I’d had all week. There were locals fishing quietly under the bridge, nodding as we floated past—I tried to say hi in Hawaiian but probably butchered it because Kaleo laughed.

Somewhere near the Duke Kahanamoku statue, city sounds faded into just water slapping gently against wood. It got quiet enough that you could hear someone strumming a ukulele from a distant balcony. I didn’t expect to feel so…unhurried. Even when we turned back toward the skyline, all lit up in golds and pinks (the sunset cruises must be wild), nobody seemed in a rush to get off.
