The Experience
I was honestly a little nervous getting on that yellow surf school bus — you could smell the ocean even before we left the curb in Waikiki. The driver cracked a joke about “surf hair, don’t care,” which made everyone relax. I’d never tried a bodyboard lesson in Waikiki before, so my expectations were all over the place. The shuttle was cool (literally, AC blasting), and it felt like everyone was just as curious or clueless as me.
At the Ohana Surf Center, our instructor — I think his name was Kaleo — handed out rash guards and fins, then asked who’d actually been on a board before. Turns out, most of us hadn’t. He grinned and said, “Perfect.” There was this salty breeze coming through the open doors while he explained safety stuff; I kept fidgeting with my wristband because I’m awkward like that. Then we walked to the beach together, boards under our arms, sun already starting to warm up the sand.
The first time I caught a wave (well, sort of caught it), water shot up my nose and I swallowed half the Pacific. Kaleo laughed and yelled something encouraging — maybe too encouraging for how much water I just inhaled. But when I finally rode one all the way in, it felt weirdly peaceful for something so splashy. The group cheered each other on; nobody cared if you wiped out or not. That’s what stuck with me most — how quickly strangers became teammates out there. Afterward, we watched our wipeouts and “victories” on video back at the center (I look ridiculous but whatever), and somehow that made it even better.
