The experience
What does it take to walk inside an active volcanic crater? On this hike, you start at the Kilauea Visitor Center and follow a route that drops you into Kilauea Illi Crater itself, where you cross a hardened lava lake on foot. The approximately 8-mile loop moves through steam vents and native Hawaiian forest, so the terrain shifts as you go. Halfway through, you reach the Thurston Lava Tube, a tunnel carved by flowing lava and now lined with native trees: one of the park's most visited spots, and you'll understand why once you walk it.
Your guide carries backpacks and trekking poles for the group, so you arrive ready to hike. Partway through the day, you stop to eat a gourmet lunch your guide has brought, which means you rest and refuel without leaving the volcanic landscape. Along the way, the guide explains the geology of what you're standing on and the history of the park, grounding the scale of the crater and the steam vents in something you can grasp. Snacks are included, so you have fuel for the full distance.
The hike demands at least a moderate level of physical fitness: 6.5 hours on an 8-mile route with elevation change means you need to be ready for sustained walking. The park entrance pass is not included in the tour price, so budget an extra $15 USD for that when you book.
What’s included
- Backpacks and trekking poles for the hike.
- a gourmet picnic lunch eaten during the tour.
- snacks throughout the day.
- a live guide in English who shares insights into the park's geology and history.

The shared group tour keeps numbers small and costs less if you're comfortable hiking alongside other travelers. Either way, you need moderate fitness for the 8-mile distance and 6.5-hour commitment. This is not a casual stroll, but the guide carries your gear and feeds you along the way.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Kilauea Iki Crater like when you hike down into it?
Kilauea Illi Crater is a volcanic crater where you descend and walk across a hardened lava lake floor. The crater has been experiencing lava eruptions since late December 2024, occurring roughly once every week or two, so the volcanic activity is ongoing, though the lava lake itself has solidified enough for safe foot travel across it.
How long does the hike take and how far do you walk?
The hike runs approximately 8 miles and takes about 6.5 hours total, including the time you spend at each stop and your lunch break partway through.
What is the Thurston Lava Tube?
The Thurston Lava Tube is a tunnel carved by flowing lava long ago, now surrounded by native Hawaiian forest. It's one of the park's most popular attractions and sits roughly halfway through your hike.
Do I need to bring my own gear?
No. Your guide provides backpacks and trekking poles for everyone on the hike, so you arrive ready to walk. A picnic lunch and snacks are included, so you don't need to pack food.
Is the national park entrance fee included?
The national park pass is not included in the tour price. Budget $15 USD for park entry when you book.
