The Experience

I’ll be honest, I almost missed the pickup because I couldn’t find my other sneaker — classic. Our driver just grinned and said, “No worries, Hawaiian time,” which made me relax right away. The van was cool inside (thank god), and as we wound out of Kona toward Mauna Loa’s slopes, our guide Lani started talking story about Pele and the island’s birth. I kept catching bits of roasted coffee in the air from our first stop at Greenwell Farms — that earthy smell stuck to my hands after tasting a cup that was way stronger than what I make at home.

We stopped at Manuka State Wayside Park for a quick stretch. It was quiet except for some birds I couldn’t name — Lani said one was an ‘io, a Hawaiian hawk. There were these old trees with trunks you could press your palm against; they felt cool even though the sun was out. The next thing I remember is standing on Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, where the sand looked like ground-up lava and felt weirdly soft between my toes. Someone pointed out a green sea turtle dozing near the waterline. People just watched in silence for a minute — it was kind of peaceful in a way I didn’t expect.

Lunch happened at Punaluʻu Bake Shop (the guava bread is still haunting me), and then we headed up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The air changed — colder, sharper, with this faint sulfur smell that reminded me we were close to something alive underneath us. At Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, there was this low rumble you could almost feel in your chest if you stood still long enough. Lani explained how eruptions shaped everything around us; she laughed when I tried to pronounce Kīlauea Iki properly (I definitely didn’t). Walking through Thurston Lava Tube felt like stepping into another world — damp walls, echoes of our footsteps, no cell service so everyone actually talked to each other for once.

I kept thinking about how locals treat these places as more than scenery — there’s real respect here for land and story. On the drive back along the Kohala Coast, golden light hit the hills in a way that made everything look softer. It all went by too fast but honestly, parts of it are still replaying in my head days later.
