Red rock canyons, gentle water, and the choice between paddling, floating or swimming

Half-day rafting on the Upper Colorado River near Vail, Colorado, where you paddle a raft or switch to an inflatable kayak or paddleboard as the mood strikes. The river flows through high-country valleys framed by red rock canyon walls and cottonwood groves at a relaxed pace with warm summer water. A professional guide leads groups of mixed ages and fitness levels. Children from age 3 are welcome, and all equipment (lifejackets, splash jackets, river shoes and the toy craft) is provided.

The experience

The Upper Colorado River stretch near 4 Eagle Ranch is known for its gentle pace and wide valley setting, which means you spend the afternoon on the water without fighting currents or navigating technical rapids. Launching from the ranch, you're on the river within minutes of leaving the Vail Valley. The defining feature here is the inflatable kayaks (called duckies) and stand-up paddleboards included in the trip: instead of staying in the main raft for two hours, you can swap between them, customize how active or relaxed you want to be, and turn the river into your personal playground. A professional guide handles navigation and safety while you decide the pace.

The day includes swim stops in the warm summer water, chances to spot local wildlife along the banks, and time to take in the red rock canyon walls and open ranchland that frame the valley. You'll wear a lifejacket, splash jacket and river shoes throughout. Transportation to and from the river is included, so you don't need to arrange your own way to the launch site. Guide gratuity is optional at checkout.
