The Experience

I didn’t expect to hear laughter echoing off the canyon walls before we’d even left Centennial Waterfront Park — but that’s how our Snake River Canyon boat tour started. Our guide, Jake, greeted us with this easy grin and a story about the first time he saw someone BASE jump off Perrine Bridge (he swears he almost dropped his sandwich). The bridge itself looked impossibly high from the water, especially when a tiny figure suddenly leapt and drifted down like it was nothing. I felt my stomach clench just watching.

The river had this slow, greenish shimmer that morning — not cold exactly, but you could smell wet stone and cottonwoods as we glided along. Jake pointed out old volcanic layers in the canyon walls; I pretended I understood geology better than I do. We passed a couple of fishermen waving from the bank, their dogs barking at us like we were intruders. There’s something about seeing a place from the water that makes everything feel bigger and smaller at once.

Getting close to Pillar Falls was quieter than I expected — you could hear just the slap of water against rock and, sometimes, someone’s sandals squeaking on the boat floor. In July and August, when the river’s lower, you can actually step out onto these weird rock islands (Jake called them “the pillars,” obviously) and wander around. The rocks are rough underfoot, so yeah — bring those water shoes they tell you about. A couple of kids jumped in for a swim; I thought about it but chickened out last minute. Still think about that cool spray hitting my face though.
