The Experience

The Salmon River run covers 12 miles of whitewater in a single day, mixing peaceful stretches with class II-III rapids that keep the paddle interesting without requiring prior experience. You get all the gear—raft, paddle, life jacket—and a guide who knows the river and the canyon's history. The pace lets you catch your breath between rapids and take in the landscape as you move downstream.

Lunch happens on the riverbank, a real meal rather than a snack, and it breaks up the day so you're not paddling on empty. After you come off the water, there's a tour of a historic gold mine in the canyon—a remnant of the valley's past that sits right where you've been rafting. The guide points out traces of the people who lived and worked in the canyon long before the modern river trips started.

The whole outing runs 7.5 hours from start to finish. Pickup is arranged for you, so you don't need to figure out how to get to the put-in. Children as young as 6 can come along; the guide and the mixed rapids mean there's something for different ages to handle. Bring a change of clothes and a towel—you will get wet.
