The Experience

You step out of the elevator at the 70th floor and the city opens up around you—all four directions at once. The views don't rotate; you do, walking from terrace to terrace, and the light changes as you move. On a clear day you see all five boroughs. The Beam Experience is the thing that makes this different from other observation decks in the city. You buckle into a harness, step onto a 12-foot steel platform suspended in air, and it rotates 180 degrees while you're standing on it—the same angle, the same height, as the ironworkers in that 1932 photograph, the one where eleven men sat down to lunch on a beam during the construction of 30 Rockefeller Plaza itself.
