The Experience

You step out of the elevator at the 70th floor and the city opens up around you: all four directions at once. Three separate observation decks, indoor and outdoor, give you Central Park to the north, the Statue of Liberty and harbor to the south, the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge framed however you want to frame them. The views don't rotate. You do, walking from terrace to terrace, and the light changes as you move. On a clear day you see all five boroughs. On a hazy one, the skyline dissolves into layers of gray and blue.

The Beam Experience is the thing that makes this different from other observation decks in the city. You buckle into a harness, step onto a 12-foot steel platform suspended in air, and it rotates 180 degrees while you're standing on it: the same angle, the same height, as the ironworkers in that 1932 photograph, the one where eleven men sat down to lunch on a beam during the construction of 30 Rockefeller Plaza itself. You're not acting it out. You're standing in the same geometry, looking at the same park. The rotation takes maybe thirty seconds. Your stomach knows it's moving. The views of Central Park and the skyline don't change much, but the fact that you're rotating changes everything about how you see them.
