Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Kayak tour through mangroves and docks

  • Meet wildlife expert guide
  • Kayak through mangroves spotting wildlife
  • Learn about Florida eco systems
  • Float by historic sponge docks

The first thing that hit me was the quiet — not silence, but that watery hush you get paddling out on the Anclote River. I could hear birds somewhere in the tangled green, and something splashed near my paddle (probably a mullet, but I didn’t see it). Our guide, Chris, waved us closer to the edge of a mangrove tunnel. He pointed out these tiny crabs scrambling up roots — honestly, I’d never noticed how much life clings to every inch here.

We drifted for a while, just letting the current take us along. The sun poked through in spots and you could smell salt mixed with something leafy — like wet earth after rain. Chris started talking about how these Florida ecosystems work together, which made me realize I barely knew anything about them before this day trip in Tarpon Springs. At one point he spotted an osprey overhead and got so excited he nearly dropped his paddle. I liked that.

We ended up floating right by the historic Sponge Docks — there’s this odd mix of old boats and bright blue paint peeling off wooden railings. A couple of locals were unloading sponges onto the dock and shouted something friendly (I think it was Greek? Tarpon Springs has a lot of Greek families). It smelled faintly of seaweed and diesel. Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed just gliding past all that history — but yeah, I still think about that view sometimes.
