Catch waves with an instructor in the water beside you
Surf lessons on the Outer Banks teach you ocean safety, paddling, the pop-up and wave-catching technique in 1.5 hours with a certified instructor, surfboard and wetsuit provided. Groups stay small: one instructor works with up to four students at a time. Kids from age 7 are welcome, and lessons run year-round at low tide when the waves are best.
The Experience
You start with the fundamentals on shore: ocean safety, how a surfboard works, and the paddling technique that gets you out to the break. Then you're in the water with your instructor, learning the pop-up (the move that takes you from lying down to standing on the board), and where your feet need to land to stay balanced. The instructor stays in the water with you the whole time, helping you catch as many waves as you can in the hour and a half.
The lesson happens at low tide, when the Outer Banks waves are most forgiving for beginners. You get a surfboard and wetsuit for the session. Everything is included in the price. The instructor-to-student ratio is one to four, so you're not fighting for attention in a crowd. Lessons run every day of the year, which means you can fit one into a free afternoon or a rainy-day plan without waiting for the right season.
