The experience
How do you see a historic city from an angle most visitors never reach? This sunrise paddleboarding class starts on land with a brief technique clinic covering paddle strokes and water safety, so you launch with the basics locked in. Kate, who has taught SUP for over 15 years, leads groups of four paddlers across the usually calm Neuse and Trent Rivers as the sun rises. The route takes you beneath bridges and past the iconic Tryon Palace (a view you can only get from the water), while your guide shares the local ecology and New Bern's history as you paddle.
Midway through the two-hour morning, you beach the boards at Jack's Island for a refuel: chilled water and snacks to keep you energized for the rest of the paddle. Before heading back to the launch point, Kate photographs your group on the water so you have digital keepsakes from the morning. The class wraps with a guided stretch and paddle recap at the shore, leaving you refreshed and ready for the rest of your day.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the technique clinic like if I've never paddleboarded before?
The clinic covers paddle technique and water safety on land before you get on the water, so you start with confidence. Kate teaches beginners regularly and keeps groups to four paddlers, which means you get personalized attention throughout the morning.
Can I see Tryon Palace clearly from the paddleboard?
Tryon Palace sits on the riverbank, and paddling past it gives you a direct on-the-water view of the building and grounds. A perspective you can't get from shore. The route also takes you beneath the city's historic bridges.
How calm are the Neuse and Trent Rivers at sunrise?
The waters are usually calm in the early morning, which is why the class is timed for sunrise. The flat conditions make it ideal for beginners learning paddle technique.
What happens at Jack's Island?
Jack's Island is a local stop about halfway through the paddle where you beach the boards and rest. The guide provides chilled water and snacks to refuel before you paddle back to the launch point.
Do I get photos from the morning?
Yes. Kate photographs your group on the water during the paddle, and you receive digital copies to take home: no printed photos, just the digital files you can share or keep.
