The experience
What separates this tour from a fixed itinerary is the planning phase: you talk with your private guide before the day starts and choose which stops matter to your group. That conversation shapes the whole experience. Some families want to linger at Fort Macon State Park, wandering the barracks and hiking the nature trails that overlook both the ocean and Bogue Sound. Others prioritize the Morehead City waterfront (the galleries, boutiques, and restaurants like the legendary Sanitary Fish Market), or time their visit to catch the Big Rock Fishing Tournament headquarters. The guide adjusts the pace and the route to fit what you actually want to see.
The drive itself is the route: a 21-mile run along the barrier island off Morehead City, with sparkling water on both sides and the Atlantic Ocean facing south. You'll cross onto the mainland to the Morehead City waterfront, where the open water views are the main draw and a fresh seafood lunch is easy to arrange. Then comes Beaufort, an old-world waterfront with a boardwalk, shops, the Maritime Museum, and the history of Blackbeard. On clear days, you might spot the wild Shackelford Banks ponies. The final leg crosses the bridge to Harkers Island and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, where the "Diamond Lady" Lighthouse is visible on clear days. The whole arc takes eight hours, but the stops and their length are yours to decide.
You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water provided. The tour is wheelchair accessible, and specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with small children. Pickup is included. The guide arrives speaking either English or Spanish, depending on what you've arranged.
