Stargazing in Moab: Learn the Night Sky with Telescopes
Trace ancient myths and spot passing satellites beneath Moab’s vast starscape
Professional stargazing in Moab is a 2-hour evening activity where you lounge in zero gravity pods and learn constellations, planets and deep-sky objects through state-of-the-art telescopes and laser pointers guided by an astronomer. You start with a walk through a scale model of the solar system, then spend the night viewing galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and more depending on what's visible that evening.
Step-by-step itinerary
Evening stargazing experience in Moab
- Walk through solar system model
- Settle into zero gravity pods
- Enjoy hot beverages
- Learn constellations with laser pointers
- View celestial objects through telescopes
The experience
You arrive at astronomical twilight and begin with a short walk through a scale model of the solar system to orient yourself to the planets before the sky darkens. Then you settle into your own zero gravity pod: a lounger designed to eliminate pressure points so you can recline comfortably for the next two hours without strain. Each pod comes with a blanket and binoculars, and hot chocolate, coffee or tea are available throughout the evening.
Your guide leads a 2-hour program using high-powered laser pointers to trace constellations and locate seasonal triangles across the sky, then moves the telescopes (operated by simple keypad, like sending a text) to show you what's actually out there. Depending on the night, you might see galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, double stars, planets, the moon, globular clusters or comets. The guide shares stories about ancient civilizations, Greek mythology and the evolution of the cosmos as you look. On rare occasions, the International Space Station or Starlink trains pass overhead and are visible from Moab's internationally certified dark skies.
The experience is built around what you can actually see from this location on this night, so the objects change with the season and the sky conditions. Your guide decides what to show based on what's up and what the telescopes can reach.
