itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Dolphin and Shell Key tour

  • Arrive by 1:15pm
  • Board Adventure 1 vessel
  • Cruise around St. Pete beach
  • Look for wild dolphins
  • Collect shells at Shell Key for 45 minutes
  • Use snorkeling equipment if weather permits
  • Enjoy shaded areas and restroom onboard

I barely had my sandals off before the salty air hit me — that mix of sunscreen and ocean you only get at St Pete Beach. Our captain (I think her name was Jamie?) waved us onto this big, white boat that somehow managed to look both sturdy and inviting. There were a couple of families already finding shady spots under the canopy. I liked that two-thirds of the boat had shade — my skin’s not built for Florida sun, you know?

We set out slow, the water kind of sparkling in that way it does right after lunch when everything feels lazy. Jamie pointed out a few pelicans and told us to keep our eyes peeled for dolphins — apparently they like to surprise people here. I didn’t expect to see them so soon, but suddenly there were these two dolphins just weaving around each other near the bow. Someone’s kid squealed, which made everyone laugh. The whole thing felt unplanned in the best way.

After maybe half an hour we pulled up to Shell Key Preserve. The sand was softer than I thought it’d be, almost powdery between my toes. I wandered off with a snorkel mask (they had plenty onboard) and tried poking around for shells — ended up finding this weirdly perfect conch that still smells faintly like saltwater days later. The water was clear enough to spot little fish darting past my ankles, though I mostly just floated and listened to the wind rattle some dry sea oats behind me.

I guess what stuck with me wasn’t just the dolphins or even the shells — it was how easy everything felt. No rush getting on or off; Jamie made sure everyone could board without fuss, even folks with strollers or grandparents who moved slow. There’s a bathroom on the boat too (which I appreciated more than I’d admit). Leaving Shell Island, I remember thinking how rare it is to feel so relaxed on a group tour. Still think about that conch sometimes.
