Paddle a calm harbor and hold the creatures you find

Kayak and snorkel in Redondo Beach Harbor, a protected bay where you paddle alongside sea lions, retrieve sand dollars and sea slugs from the seafloor, and watch pelicans and cormorants hunt. No experience or swimming ability required. The guide handles all setup and can teach snorkeling on the water. Kayaks, life vests and snorkeling gear are included. Free parking and clean bathrooms with showers are on-site.

The experience

Redondo Beach Harbor stays so calm that beginners and non-swimmers kayak here comfortably. You paddle out on your own kayak (the guide leads and stays close), and stop to watch wildlife: sea lions, pelicans, cormorants, urchins and more. The guide jumps in the water, retrieves creatures like sand dollars and sea slugs, and brings them to the surface so you can hold them or get a close look. It reads like a safari on the water, except you're the one paddling.

The three-hour session leaves room to eat afterward. Many paddlers grab lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants near the harbor, or pick up an ice cream taco on the way out. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or Chinese, and can teach you to snorkel if you want to try it during the paddle. Kayaks, life vests and snorkeling equipment are all provided. You bring nothing but yourself.

Redondo Beach Harbor is wheelchair accessible, and the guide can accommodate infants in a pram, small children riding in the kayak, and elderly or less mobile paddlers by towing them behind. Free parking and clean bathrooms with showers are steps from the water.
