Sitka Sound Sunset Cruise: Private Wildlife Charter
Watch for whales and sea otters while your captain navigates Sitka Sound's islands at golden hour.
A private 2-hour sunset cruise through Sitka Sound aboard a Coast Guard-approved Stabicraft, captained by a Merchant Marine veteran with 30+ years on the water. You pick the start time (at least an hour before sunset), and the captain routes to the best wildlife and volcano views based on the day's conditions. The boat holds your group only, with a heated cabin, snacks, sodas and water included. The captain may head to the Saint Lazaira Islands if seas allow, or work the sound's islands and coves for humpback whales, sea otters, sea lions, orcas, eagles and puffins.

The experience
Sitka Sound is a maze of islands and coves on the western side of Baranof Island, and this tour trades the typical shore-bound view for a captain's-eye route through it. Your Suzy-Q is a double-hulled aluminum Stabicraft built in New Zealand: stable enough to handle the Pacific's moods while staying nimble enough to slip into the narrow channels where wildlife congregates. The captain, Chris, has spent three decades reading these waters and knows where to find the animals and the light. Every tour is custom-routed: if the sea state allows it, you'll head out to the Saint Lazaira Islands. If not, the sound's own islands and coves hold humpback whales, sea otters, sea lions, dolphins, harbor seals, orcas, eagles and puffins in their seasons.
You choose when to depart (at least an hour before sunset is the recommendation), so the timing slots into the rest of your day in Sitka. The 2 hours can be shortened or extended as your group wants. The boat is yours alone, and the captain adjusts the route and pace to what you're seeing. A heated cabin means you're not exposed to the wind the whole time, and snacks, sodas and water are on board. The captain will have you back to your shuttle or cruise ship before departure, so if you're on a ship call, the timing is locked in.
Mt. Edgecumbe, the local volcano, often shows itself at sunset if the weather cooperates: a 3,201-foot cone rising from the water with the light hitting it at the end of the day. That's the view the tour is built around, though the wildlife and the sound's geography are what actually fill the hours. The Tongass National Forest surrounds you, the largest intact temperate rain forest in the continent, and from the water you see it the way it actually exists: not as a backdrop, but as the working landscape it is.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What wildlife might we see on the Sitka Sound cruise?
Humpback whales, sea otters, sea lions, dolphins, harbor seals, orcas, eagles and puffins are all possible depending on the season and where the captain finds them that day. The route is custom-planned each time based on where animals are most active.
Can we visit the Saint Lazaira Islands, or does the boat stay in Sitka Sound?
The captain will head to the Saint Lazaira Islands if sea conditions allow it. If the seas are rougher, the tour works the islands and coves of Sitka Sound itself, which holds the same wildlife and views.
What time should we book the departure for the best sunset views?
At least one hour before sunset is recommended so you have time to cruise and position for the light. You pick the exact start time when you book, and the captain times the route to catch Mt. Edgecumbe and the sound lit up at the end of the day.
Is the boat heated, and what happens if the weather turns rough?
Yes, the Suzy-Q has a heated cabin. Every tour is custom-designed based on the day's weather and sea state. The captain adjusts the route and pace to keep the experience safe and comfortable while still reaching the best wildlife and sunset locations.
How does the private charter work? Is it just our group on the boat?
Yes, it's a private charter, so your group has the boat and captain to yourselves. The captain customizes the route, timing and stops based on what your party wants to see and the conditions that day.
Will we make it back to our cruise ship on time if we're docked in Sitka?
The captain guarantees return to your shuttle or directly to your cruise ship before departure. Let the operator know your ship's departure time when you book so the timing is locked in.
