Suzy Q is a New Zealand-built aluminum boat with a heated cabin, designed for safety and comfort in Southeast Alaska waters. The captain-guide handles navigation while you fish the salt with your own rod, feeling the bite instead of watching a line troll behind the boat. Mooching (dropping bait and working it by hand) means multiple anglers can fish at once, and it tends to hook more fish than trolling does. You'll target salmon, halibut, lingcod and rockfish, and may pull up sharks, rays, skates or other species depending on the day.
The charter runs four hours as standard, but you control the length: fish longer if the bite stays hot, or head back to town early if you've had enough. You pick any start time between 6am and 4pm, so you can time it around the rest of your day in Sitka or coordinate with a cruise ship schedule. Snacks, water, sodas and ice are included. Bring rain gear and waterproof boots. You'll need a valid Alaska fishing license, which you buy online before arrival and print to bring aboard. It's required by law.
The boat departs from Outer Coast Charters' base on the western side of Baranof Island. If mobility is a concern, the operator can reposition the boat closer to your location before you arrive. The captain guarantees return to your shuttle or directly to the cruise ship before departure.

Is this one for you?Four hours is the standard length, which leaves room for other activities in Sitka or fits neatly into a cruise port day if you book the right window. Extend it if the fishing is strong or you want more time on the water. Shorten it if you've caught enough and want to explore town.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What fish can I catch on this charter in Sitka Sound?
Salmon, halibut, lingcod and rockfish are the main targets, though you may also hook salmon sharks, rays, skates, sculpins, kelp greenling or wolf eels depending on conditions. After you photograph your catch, the captain makes every effort to safely return the fish to the sea.
Do I need to bring my own fishing gear or is it provided?
All fishing equipment and tackle are provided aboard Suzy Q. You need to bring rain gear and waterproof boots or shoes. A hat and sunglasses are also recommended. A valid Alaska fishing license is required and must be purchased online before your trip, printed and signed, then brought with you.
Can I choose when the charter starts and how long I fish?
Yes. You select any start time between 6am and 4pm, and you decide when to return. Four hours are included in the price, but you can shorten or extend the charter as needed, so you fish as long as the bite holds or until you're ready to head back.
What is mooching and why does this charter use it instead of trolling?
Mooching is a hand-line technique where you drop bait and work it by moving the rod, rather than towing a line behind the boat. It typically catches more fish and lets every angler feel the bite on their rod, so multiple people can fish actively at the same time instead of watching one or two lines.
Is this charter suitable if I'm traveling with a cruise ship, and will I get back in time?
Yes. The operator guarantees return to your cruise ship prior to departure. You control the start time and duration, so you can book a charter window that fits your ship's schedule. If you have mobility concerns, let the operator know in advance and they can reposition the boat to make boarding easier.
