The experience
Ever wonder what it’s like to leave the cruise crowds behind in Sitka and just… slip into the wild? That’s how our day started. We got picked up right at Old Sitka Dock, no waiting around, and before I’d even finished my coffee, we were winding through spruce forests with our guide, Li. She had this way of pointing out things I’d never have noticed: the sharp smell of wet moss after last night’s rain, or how the ravens always seem to know when a bear’s nearby. I remember her laughing when I tried to pronounce “Starrigavan”. I definitely butchered it. Didn’t matter though. Everyone seemed relaxed here.
The drive out to Fortress of the Bear felt shorter than I expected (maybe 15 minutes?), but every window was full of mountains and those endless Alaskan trees. The bears themselves. I mean, you can read about them, but seeing them up close is different. There was this one brown bear sprawled on its back like a giant dog, paws in the air. The place smelled faintly sweet, almost like damp hay. They told us to book tickets ahead for this stop. Glad we did because it was busy even on a Tuesday.
After that, we stopped at the Alaska Raptor Center. If you’ve never seen a bald eagle blink at you from three feet away, well… it’s something. The staff here really care about these birds. You could hear it in their voices as they explained how each one ended up here. I kept thinking about how quiet it got whenever an owl turned its head toward us: like everyone just held their breath for a second.
We finished up at Castle Hill (Baranof Castle State Historic Site), climbing past patches of wildflowers and catching that first view over Sitka Harbor: gray water dotted with fishing boats and those onion domes poking above town. Li told us about the Tlingit history here and pointed out carvings on old totem poles at Sitka National Historical Park later on. It wasn’t rushed. There was time to wander or just stand there letting the wind mess your hair up a bit. Honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
