The Experience

Sitka National Historical Park is where the tour opens. You walk trails lined with intricately carved totem poles that tell the stories of the Tlingit people, moving through the Tongass National Forest—the largest temperate rainforest in the world—where moss-draped trees and streams frame the coast. The visitor center holds exhibits on Tlingit craftsmanship, Russian-American history, and the 1804 Battle of Sitka. In late summer and fall, salmon move upstream through Indian River, a sight the guide will point out if the timing aligns.

Fortress of the Bear comes next. You view rescued brown and black bears from elevated platforms in a naturalized habitat where the animals roam and interact much as they would in the wild. The staff shares the rescue stories and conservation work behind each bear. The Alaska Raptor Center follows, where you walk through the Raptor Woodland to see bald eagles, owls, and hawks in a forest setting, and step into the flight training aviary where recovering raptors regain strength before release. Volunteers explain each bird's story and the rehabilitation process.
