Ever wondered what it’s like to paddle quietly under those tangled green arches in Florida? I didn’t really know what to expect when we met Greg—everyone just calls him Capt. Yak—down by the water near Shell Key. He’s got this sun-faded hat and a way of talking about manatees like they’re old friends. The air smelled salty but there was this sweet, earthy note from the mangroves that hit me as soon as we pushed off. I kept thinking, “How does anyone ever find their way through here?” but Greg seemed to know every twist.
