The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the dust—it clung to my shoes before we even left the lot in Uptown Sedona. Our guide, Mark, tossed us a quick grin and a bottle of water (“you’ll want this!”), then we were bouncing up Schnebly Hill Road, the 4x4 rattling like it had something to prove. I kept squinting at the shapes in the rocks—Snoopy lying flat as if he’d just dozed off, Cathedral Rock catching the late sun in those weird orange-pink stripes. It’s loud, but somehow peaceful too; you hear wind scraping through junipers and someone’s dog barking (yes, dogs are allowed—ours looked happier than anyone).

I tried to take a photo but ended up laughing because my hand wouldn’t stop shaking from the bumps. Mark pointed out edible plants—agave, prickly pear—and told this story about early settlers getting lost right where we were now. He knew every twist in that trail. At one point we stopped near a ledge above Oak Creek Canyon and it just…hit me how high up we’d climbed (2,000 feet, apparently). The air smelled sharp and clean—like pine needles crushed underfoot—and you could see for miles across Coconino National Forest. Someone asked about the Sinagua people and Mark got quiet for a second before sharing what he knew. That silence stuck with me.

It wasn’t all facts though. There was this moment when Mark tried to get us to spot “the Cowpies” (he said it with a straight face) and half of us burst out laughing. The light changed so fast—one minute gold, next minute shadows swallowing up Elephant Rock. We never really stopped moving for long; every time I thought we’d seen the best view, another corner opened up something new. I still think about that last stretch down—the way everything glowed for just a second before dusk settled in.
