The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost bailed when I saw our Jeep. It looked like something you’d see in an old Western, only with way bigger tires. The guide, Mark (he had that sunburned Arizona look), just grinned and said, “Don’t worry, she’s tougher than she looks.” My friend forgot her sunglasses and had to borrow a pair from another couple — they were bright pink and honestly made the photos better. So yeah, not exactly how I pictured starting a day trip to the Mogollon Rim from Sedona.

Once we started bouncing up that old wagon trail out of town, I stopped caring about anything except holding on. The air smelled sharp and dusty — like juniper and hot stone. Mark kept pointing out weird rock shapes (“That’s Snoopy Rock — see his nose?”) and little changes in the trees as we climbed higher. At one point he pulled over so we could feel the difference in the air; it really did get cooler fast as we gained elevation. I tried to take a video but mostly caught my own laughter and some bad camera angles.

The best part was reaching the top of the Mogollon Rim. You’re suddenly at 7,000 feet looking down at all those red cliffs and winding roads below — it’s quiet up there except for wind through the pines (and someone’s water bottle rolling around). Mark told us about old cattle drives through Bear Wallow Canyon, which made me imagine what this place must’ve felt like before Jeeps were even a thing. There was this moment where everyone just stopped talking for a second — I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
