Summary

Puget Sound sailing from Seattle with views of Mount Rainier

You’ll slip away from Seattle’s noise onto Puget Sound for three hours of private sailing with your own group. Spot seals or sea lions (maybe even whales), catch glimpses of Mount Rainier if it’s clear, and enjoy BYOB drinks as your local guide steers—or lets you try. It’s relaxed, sometimes windy, always memorable.

experience

What’s the experience like?

You know that feeling when you step off the busy Seattle streets and suddenly everything’s quiet except for the slap of water against the hull? That’s how our private sailing tour started. We met our captain at the marina — he had this easy way about him, like he’d been doing this forever but still actually enjoyed it. The boat was smaller than I pictured (fits six), which made it feel less like a “tour” and more like we were just out with friends. The air had that salty, almost metallic smell you get near the Sound, and I could already see Bainbridge Island across the water.

We brought a cooler of snacks and a couple bottles (BYOB is definitely encouraged), so after we pushed off, everyone settled in with a drink. Our guide pointed out sea lions lounging on one of those weird floating buoys — honestly, they looked pretty smug about it. There was this moment when the sails caught a gust and we tilted just enough to make my stomach flip (in a good way). Sunlight kept flickering through clouds over the Olympic Mountains, and someone spotted Mount Rainier way off in the haze. I tried to get a photo but mostly just ended up squinting into the wind.

I didn’t expect to actually help steer, but our captain handed me the tiller for a bit — turns out I’m not great at it, but nobody seemed to mind. He told us stories about growing up here and how sometimes orcas show up if you’re lucky (not today, but maybe next time). The whole three hours went by weirdly fast; I kept thinking I should remember what it felt like to just drift out there while Seattle shrank behind us. Even now I can picture how cold my hands got on that rope, but I didn’t really care.
