The Experience
We were already halfway through our first cocktail when our guide, Marcus, leaned in and whispered about the “bad kitty” who started it all—something about jealousy, betrayal, and a love triangle gone sideways in one of Savannah’s oldest bars. The place smelled like spiced rum and old wood. I kept glancing over my shoulder because someone (or something?) kept creaking the floorboards behind us. Marcus just grinned. “That’s probably Lucy,” he said. Not sure if he was joking but I didn’t want to find out.
After that we spilled out onto the street—Savannah at night is sticky-warm, even in spring—and wandered toward another haunted pub. There’s this weird comfort in walking with strangers who are also listening for ghosts. Someone in our group tried to say the name of the next bar in their best Southern accent; it came out all wrong and made everyone laugh, even a couple locals on their smoke break outside. The open container thing here is real—you just walk along with your drink like it’s no big deal.
The cemetery stop was quieter than I expected. You could smell wet grass and something floral drifting from somewhere nearby. Marcus told us about lovers who never left each other—even after death—and I caught myself shivering, though maybe that was just the breeze or maybe the story got under my skin a little more than I’d admit out loud.
I still think about how Savannah feels at midnight: mischievous, a little sad, but mostly alive with stories you’ll only half believe until you’re standing there yourself. So yeah—if you want a haunted pub crawl that’s more wild than spooky history lesson, this is probably your thing.
