The Experience

The tour begins at the boat launch with a guide fitting you into a kayak, PFD, paddle jacket and helmet, then walking through a paddling demonstration and safety talk to make sure you're comfortable before pushing off. You'll paddle roughly one to two miles along the coast, moving through the harbor past other boats, under the pier, and along the beach where the city skyline and the Santa Ynez Mountain range light up as the sun sets. The guide points out what lives in the water—harbor seals, sea lions, brown pelicans, sea stars, cormorants—and talks through the natural history and marine ecology of the area.

Double kayaks are standard; single kayaks go to solo travelers or anyone over 230 pounds. Children under 12 paddle in a double with an adult, and kids under 5 aren't permitted. Bring a reusable water bottle, sunscreen (SPF 30+), a hat, sunglasses with a strap, wet shoes like Tevas, and a swimsuit or trunks—everything you bring risks getting damp, so leave cameras and dry clothes in your car. The tour runs year-round, but the start time changes with sunset, so you'll need to call the office to confirm your exact meet time.

A minimum of two participants is required to run the tour; if the group doesn't meet that threshold after confirmation, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund. Single travelers can call ahead to check availability. The guide speaks English and leads the whole group together, so everyone hears the same commentary and safety information at the same pace.
