Paddle into kelp beds where dolphins and sea lions actually show up

Kayak the Gaviota Coast near Santa Barbara on a 3.5-hour guided paddle through one of California's few remaining undeveloped coastlines. You'll operate your own kayak (or share a double), paddle roughly 3 miles through kelp beds, and learn about marine ecology from your guide while watching for wildlife. Gear, wetsuit and instruction are included; children from age 5 are welcome, and the trip suits all fitness levels.

The Experience

Your guide outfits you on shore with a wetsuit, paddle jacket, personal flotation device and helmet, then walks through the basics of paddling before you launch. The Gaviota Coast holds more than 1,500 plant and animal species in a stretch of California coastline that has stayed mostly undeveloped—the kind of place where encounters with dolphins and sea lions happen regularly enough that the operator counts on them. You'll paddle roughly 3 miles total, stopping in the kelp beds to learn how that ecosystem works and what lives inside it.

The guide leads the pace and points out what's moving in the water and along the rocks. There's time built in to swim if you want to, though the water stays cold enough that most people stay in their wetsuits. The whole outing runs 3.5 hours from start to finish, which means you're not committing a full day and the afternoon is still yours.

Children under 12 paddle in a double kayak with an adult; kids under 5 aren't permitted. Guests over 230 pounds get a single kayak for stability. The operator asks for your height and weight when you book so the gear fits properly. Bring sunscreen, a water bottle, a hat, a towel, beach shoes and a change of dry clothes—the sun and salt water are relentless, and you'll want to be comfortable after you get out.

What’s included

  • Kayaking gear (wetsuit, paddle jacket, personal flotation device and helmet).
  • knowledgeable guide leading the paddle and explaining marine ecology and the Santa Barbara Channel.
  • instruction on shore before launch.
  • all taxes, fees and handling charges.

Operated by Santa Barbara Adventure Company

Is this one for you?You operate the kayak yourself on a shared paddle with a small group, which means you're moving through the water under your own power rather than watching from a boat. It suits anyone who wants to be in the water and moving, not sitting still—and the guide handles the route, the timing and the wildlife spotting so you can focus on paddling.
