The Experience
We stepped off the curb in Jackson Square, right where the city feels like it still remembers its wild Gold Rush days. Our guide, Jamie, waved us over to an old brick building — she said it’s one of the few that survived all those earthquakes and fires. I pressed my hand to the wall (couldn’t help it) and it felt cool and rough, like time itself. The air smelled faintly of coffee from somewhere nearby, but also something metallic — maybe just my imagination running with all those stories about gold dust and gunpowder.
The walk up to Nob Hill was no joke — my legs burned a little but Jamie kept us distracted with tales of railroad barons and their crazy parties. She pointed out Grace Cathedral’s doors (they really do look like something out of Europe) and we ducked inside for a minute. It was quiet, almost echoey, and the stained glass made everything feel softer somehow. I didn’t expect to feel moved by a church but there you go.
Chinatown hit me with color and noise all at once — red lanterns overhead, shopkeepers chatting in Cantonese, someone frying garlic somewhere close. We stopped at this tiny fortune cookie place tucked down an alley; I tried folding one myself (badly) and got flour everywhere. The woman behind the counter laughed and handed me a warm sample — honestly, nothing like the ones back home.
We finished at the Ferry Building just as the afternoon light started slanting across the bay. People were spilling out of bakeries with fresh bread, someone played guitar near the entrance. I bought a pastry without really needing it — just wanted to stretch out that feeling a bit longer. Sometimes you get these days where a city lets you in on its secrets for a while; San Francisco did that for me.
