The Experience

The first thing I remember is the wind—sharp but not cold—whipping through Pacific Heights as our little group rolled along in this funny open-air safari van. Our guide, Marcus, had a way of pointing out things I’d never have noticed: a faded mural above a bakery, some wild parrots screeching overhead (I thought he was joking until I saw them). We stopped at Alamo Square for that classic Painted Ladies photo—honestly, they looked smaller than on TV, but with the city skyline behind them and someone playing guitar nearby, it just felt… real. Not staged at all.

I’m not sure what I expected from Haight-Ashbury. Maybe more tie-dye? But it’s mostly vintage shops and people with dogs. The Golden Gate Bridge is just… there. Huge, red-orange against the fog (which really does roll in like a blanket). We crossed over for a different angle—Marin Headlands maybe?—and the view made everyone go quiet for a second. Then back down to Pier 33, where Marcus handed us our Alcatraz ferry tickets with this little “good luck on the Rock” wink. The boat ride was choppy but kind of peaceful if you leaned into it.

Walking through Alcatraz with those headphones on was strange—I could hear old doors clanging shut in my ears while gulls screamed outside. Some parts smelled faintly damp, like old stone after rain. You can stay as long as you want; I wandered until my legs got tired and the sun started dropping behind the city. Still think about that echo in the cellhouse sometimes, you know?
