Shuttle to the Arkansas River, Paddle Half a Day, Come Back Dry

You get picked up at the office, shuttled to the Arkansas River, and guided through a half-day float with Class I-II rapids and calm sections where you can see the Rockies and wildlife. Gear — helmet, PFD, wetsuit, splash jacket — is included, and the guide handles safety and navigation so you just paddle and float. The shuttle back to the office wraps the trip up by early afternoon.

Step-by-step itinerary

Rafting adventure on Arkansas River

  • Shuttle to river
  • Raft on class I and II rapids
  • Enjoy floating and mountain views
  • Shuttle back to office

The Experience

You drive out from the office in Buena Vista, heading toward the Arkansas River just minutes away. The shuttle is part of the trip — it means you don't have to figure out parking or logistics at the put-in, and the guides use the ride to go over safety and what to expect. By the time you step out of the van, you're already oriented and ready to get on the water.

The Salida Valley section of the Arkansas River is built for people who want to raft without the adrenaline spike. Class I and II rapids are spaced out, so you're not paddling hard the whole time — there are long stretches where the current does the work and you can actually look around. The Rocky Mountains sit on both sides, and if you're quiet, you'll see wildlife. A trained guide runs the boat and handles the technical parts; your job is to paddle when they say paddle and enjoy the float when the water flattens out. The whole thing takes a few hours, morning or afternoon depending on what fits your schedule.

Before you launch, the company outfits you at the office: PFD, helmet, and a safety briefing that covers what to do if you fall in and how to brace yourself in the boat. If the water or air is cold, wetsuits and splash jackets are free — you don't rent them separately or pay extra. The company is based closer to the river access than other outfitters in the area, which cuts down on shuttle time and means less sitting around before you actually get on the water.

After you paddle back to the take-out, the van brings you straight back to the office. You're done in time for lunch or an afternoon activity, and you don't have to wring out your clothes in a parking lot or figure out where to change.
