The experience

The tour starts with 20 minutes of training on the Segway i2 before you head out. Once you're steady, you'll ride along the palm tree-lined Tampa Bay seawall in downtown Saint Petersburg, where the guide points out manatees and dolphins in their natural habitat. The headset receiver lets you hear the guide's commentary about local ecosystems and wildlife without raising your voice over the wind.

After the seawall stretch, you'll ride through North Straub Park and the Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum, a small garden with palm species from around the world. Then comes the main stop: Sunken Gardens, where you dismount and walk through 4 acres of exotic botanical landscape. The garden holds 50,000 tropical plants and flowers, flamingos, macaws, parrots and koi-filled ponds. The guide continues to share information about the plants and animals as you move through the space on foot.

A bottle of water is included, and the whole experience runs 2.5 hours. The small group size (no more than six people per booking) means the pace stays manageable and the guide can answer questions without managing a crowd. You'll need comfortable shoes without heels and weather-appropriate clothing. The tour operates rain or shine.
