Royal Gorge Class 4+ Whitewater Rafting: Colorado's Premier River
Four hours of class 4+ rapids inside a gorge a thousand feet deep
Royal Gorge Half Day Trip is a 4-hour class 4+ whitewater rafting experience on Colorado's Royal Gorge, where you paddle through a 1100-foot-deep canyon under the world's highest suspension bridge with a professional guide. Wetsuits and splash jackets are included; minimum age is 16 and participants must be able to swim.
Step-by-step itinerary
Whitewater rafting adventure
- Arrive at raft trip meeting location
- Participate in class 4+ whitewater rafting
- Raft under world's highest suspension bridge
- Enjoy Colorado scenery including Royal Gorge
The Experience
The trip starts at the meeting location and puts you in the current of one of the premier whitewater runs in the country. You'll paddle through the Royal Gorge—a narrow canyon carved 1100 feet deep—where the river narrows and the walls rise around you. The world's highest suspension bridge spans overhead as you run the rapids, a landmark visible from the water that frames the scale of what you're moving through. A professional guide leads the raft and reads the current, calling out when to paddle hard and when to brace for the drop.
Class 4+ water means consistent big rapids, not a single monster drop. You're paddling the whole time, not watching. The guide handles the steering, but your paddle does the work—driving the raft through chutes, holding it steady in the chaos, pulling back when the current wants to flip you sideways. Wetsuits and splash jackets come with the trip, so you stay warm in the cold Colorado runoff even when you're taking water over the bow.
The 4-hour window includes the paddle itself and the shuttle back to the meeting point. Bring a towel and dry clothes; the river is cold year-round. Souvenir photos are available to purchase after the run if you want a record of the day.
What’s included
- Professional guide leading the raft.
- wetsuits and splash jackets for all paddlers.
- shuttle back to the meeting location.

What does class 4+ whitewater mean for someone who's never rafted before?
Class 4+ rapids are big, consistent, and require active paddling and quick reactions—not beginner water. This trip is built for people who want adrenaline and are comfortable in fast current; the guide handles steering, but you're paddling hard the whole time.
How deep is the Royal Gorge and what does it look like from the water?
The Royal Gorge is 1100 feet deep, with sheer rock walls rising around you as you paddle. The world's highest suspension bridge crosses overhead, visible from the river and framing the scale of the canyon.
What happens if I fall out of the raft?
Participants must be able to swim. The guide is trained in swift-water rescue, and you'll be wearing a splash jacket that helps keep you afloat; the cold water and current are why swimming ability is a requirement.
How cold is the water and what should I wear?
Colorado's Royal Gorge runs cold year-round from snowmelt. Wetsuits and splash jackets are included with the trip; bring a towel and dry clothes to change into after you paddle.
