itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Full-day rafting on Arkansas River

  • Raft Class III rapids in morning
  • Take riverside lunch break
  • Continue rafting through Royal Gorge

First thing I remember is our guide, Mike, handing me a paddle with this big grin—like he already knew how soaked we’d get. He asked if anyone had ever rafted the Arkansas River before (nope), then told us to watch for bighorn sheep on the cliffs. The morning air was cool and sharp, almost metallic, and you could smell wet stone and pine needles. I didn’t expect to laugh so much before even getting in the raft—someone dropped their helmet and it bounced into the water. Mike just shrugged and said, “That’s why we have extras.”

The first stretch through Bighorn Sheep Canyon was wild but not terrifying—just enough splashes to wake you up if you weren’t already. The river sounded like it was arguing with itself over every rock. We hit a few Class III rapids that made my heart jump; I remember gripping the paddle so hard my hands hurt later. At lunch we stopped by the riverbank—sandwiches tasted way better than they should’ve, maybe because everything smelled like sun-warmed sagebrush. Someone tried to skip stones but just ended up soaking their shoes.

After lunch, the sky got brighter and we headed into the Royal Gorge itself. The walls closed in fast—suddenly it felt like paddling through a giant stone throat. Mike pointed out where the old railroad runs above us (I still can’t believe people built that). Rapids here were louder, rougher; at one point I thought we’d tip but somehow we all stayed in. There was this moment right after a big drop where nobody spoke—just river noise echoing off rock—and I kind of wanted that silence to last longer.

I keep thinking about how small you feel down there between those cliffs, but also how weirdly safe it felt with Mike calling out every move (“Left forward! Right back!”). By the time we pulled out at the end of our Royal Gorge rafting day trip from Cañon City, everyone looked exhausted but happy. My arms were jelly. Would do it again just for that mix of nerves and laughter—and honestly for that riverside lunch too.
