The experience

The trip starts at the outfitter's store in Ashland, where you choose your vessel (a paddle raft, an inflatable kayak, or an oared raft), and get fitted with all the gear you need. Transport takes you to the put-in on the Rogue River, and from there the canyon begins to close in. Hellgate Canyon is where the river enters the coastal range of mountains, and the walls rise straight out of the water. As you float through, osprey and eagles work the river for fish, and the current carries you past the dramatic geology without much effort on the float sections.

The whitewater comes in two distinct gorges with class II rapids that give you something to work for without overwhelming a beginner or a younger paddler. The trip is built around that balance: enough current and waves to feel like you're actually paddling, not enough to turn a family outing into a fight. Four hours total, including the float time and the rapids, means you're back at the store by early afternoon.

What’s included

  • All river equipment including personal flotation device and paddle.
  • choice of paddle raft, inflatable kayak, or oared raft.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (4 to 17 years). Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the difference between the paddle raft, the inflatable kayak and the oared raft?

The paddle raft is what most groups choose. You and others paddle together, sharing the work and the spray. The inflatable kayak is a single-person boat where you control the paddle and the line through the water, which is why it's popular with people learning to kayak. The oared raft has a guide rowing while you sit and take in the canyon, which works well for families with very young children or anyone who wants to watch more than paddle.

How rough is the whitewater on this stretch of the Rogue?

The rapids are class II, which means they have waves and current but no drops or obstacles that flip boats or require rescue. You'll get wet and you'll work the paddle, but the trip is designed so that families with kids and first-time paddlers can handle it without prior experience.

What should I bring or wear?

Wear clothes that can get wet: a swimsuit or quick-dry pants and a shirt. Water shoes or sneakers with good grip are better than sandals. The outfitter provides a personal flotation device and all paddling gear. Sunscreen and a towel are smart additions, and the store is close enough that you can leave a dry change of clothes in your car.

Can my four-year-old come on this trip?

Children from age 4 are welcome, and they must be accompanied by an adult. Younger kids usually do best in an oared raft where a guide rows and the child can sit safely without paddling, or in a paddle raft where an adult can help manage the paddle and keep them stable through the rapids.

How long is the whole experience, including transport?

The trip itself is four hours on the water, and that includes the float sections and the two rapids. Add time before and after for gear fitting and transport to and from the put-in, so plan for a morning or early afternoon block of time.
