The experience
Charleston sits in the heart of West Virginia's hill country, and Promise Land Bee Farm sits deeper still: an off-grid operation unlike most farms you'll visit. You'll see emus, donkeys, peacocks, pigs, goats and various birds moving across the property, all part of what life looked like for old West Virginians living back in the hills without grid power. The farm is built around the honeybees, and your guide will walk you through why they matter and how they're kept, then let you get close enough to observe the hives from the outside and watch the bees at work.
Hands-on time with the animals is the heart of the tour. You interact with them directly rather than watching from a distance. At the end, you'll taste fresh honey harvested from the farm's own hives. The whole experience runs between one and three hours depending on how much time you spend with the animals and how many questions you have for your guide. Private transportation is included, and the tour welcomes children as young as one, though infants need to sit on an adult's lap.
