The Experience
I still remember the crunch of gravel under our tires as we started out on the Old Munds Wagon trail. Our guide, Mike, grew up in Flagstaff—he pointed out spots where cattle once crossed, and you could almost picture the old wagons bumping along. The air was dry but not too hot, just that perfect Arizona warmth with a hint of pine from the nearby forest. Every so often, we’d pass a local hiker or someone walking their dog—everyone seemed to know each other out here.
The real showstopper? When we reached the Mogollon Rim. The view just sort of hits you—layers of red rock stretching for miles, with Sedona’s buttes glowing in the afternoon sun. Mike handed us binoculars and showed us where the Colorado Plateau drops off; you could see all the way toward New Mexico if you squinted. There was this quiet up there, except for a hawk circling overhead and the distant sound of wind through junipers. We took a few photos, but honestly, it was hard to look away from the landscape long enough to snap them.
