The experience
The tour runs eight to eleven hours depending on which stops you choose and how long you linger at each one. You start at one of Hawai'i's oldest coffee farms, where you'll sample ten different roasts and walk the grounds. Then move through Punalu'u Bakery to taste the island's famous Hawaiian sweetbread and malasada. From there the route takes you to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, where your guide explains the local ecology and you search for protected Hawaiian green sea turtles in the water.
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park anchors the middle of the day. You'll see the landscape of Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes across over 300,000 acres: volcanic craters, lava tubes and rainforest all visible in a single stop. The afternoon swings through Hilo's scenic bay route, past Coconut Island and Banyan Drive, then to Liliʻuokalani Gardens, a Japanese-inspired garden space, and Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that drops into a pool below a lava cave. A stop at a local candy store rounds out the route, where you can sample and buy island-made treats.
Because the itinerary is fully customizable, you can swap any of these stops for others the operator accommodates: Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, Akaka Falls, Kaumana Caves, Waipio Valley Lookout, South Point, or any coffee farm or farmers market you prefer. Your guide contacts you after booking to discuss what matters most to your group and build the day around it. Private transportation is included for your group size, as are breakfast, lunch, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain jackets and bottled water.
