The Experience

“You know, this whole thing started because no one could afford a restaurant lease,” our guide Jamie said as she handed me a helmet outside the shop on SE Main. I liked her right away—she had that Portland mix of dry humor and total sincerity. The bikes were lighter than I expected (I’m not exactly Tour de France material), and after some wobbly first pedals we set off into Ladd’s Addition. It was still early enough that the air smelled like coffee and wet pavement, which is basically the city’s perfume.

The first stop was a tiny cart wedged between two others, steam curling up from a grill. Matt waved us over—he runs the barbecue taco spot everyone talks about. I tried to order in Spanish but mostly just made him laugh. The taco itself was smoky and sweet, with pickled onions that zinged my tongue awake. Jamie told us how Matt used to work nights at a hotel before he saved enough for his own cart. There’s something about eating food from someone who actually cares if you like it.

We rode up toward Mt. Tabor next—didn’t know there were extinct volcanoes in Portland until today—and stopped at another pod where the carts looked like they’d been painted by daydreamers. One cart did these grown-up versions of childhood snacks; I bit into a crispy rice treat laced with Oregon hazelnuts and thought about my grandma for some reason. Not sure why that hit me so hard, but it did. Maybe it was the way the owner grinned when he saw us enjoying his food.

Hawthorne Boulevard felt louder and looser, music spilling out of open windows and people waving from stoops. We parked our bikes near Cartopia—Jamie called it “the epicenter of Portland’s food cart universe”—and she told us how the whole scene exploded here years ago. There was a coffee cart built out of an old van; my Americano tasted earthy and strong, perfect for cutting through all those flavors lingering on my tongue.

I didn’t expect to feel so connected to people just by sharing snacks on sidewalks, but here we are. Even now I can almost smell that first coffee again—or maybe it’s just my jacket still carrying Portland around with me.
