The Experience

You arrive hungry, and that's the point. The tour departs from the Historic Bike Shop in Old Town Portland and moves through the neighborhoods where the city's food culture actually lives. A local guide leads groups small enough to move between stops without losing anyone, and you'll cover the ground on either a standard multispeed bike or an e-bike (available for riders 14 and up). Rain gear is provided if the weather turns, so the only thing you're managing is your appetite.

The stops are chosen for what they represent in Portland's food story. You'll visit a tea blender that ships small-batch infusions worldwide but also pours for walk-ins; then the Hawthorne cart pod at SE 12th and Hawthorne Boulevard, a corner that's been the nerve center of Portland's food cart culture since 2008 and helped pioneer the late-night scene the city is known for. The pod houses eight different carts — Bottle Rocket, Perierra Creperie, Pyro Pizza, Chicken & Guns, BKK Pad Thai, El Brasero, Tahrir Square, and Potato Champion — so you're tasting across cuisines in one place. The final stop is a local ice cream maker working from scratch in Portland, legend-dairy and legend-non-dairy both.

The ride itself is 7-8 miles at a moderate pace, so you need to be comfortable on a bike and used to riding. The minimum height is 4'11", and the tour is open to anyone 10 and up on a standard bike, or 14 and up on an e-bike. Public transit stops are nearby if you need to bail out early or get back to your hotel without pedaling. The whole thing runs three hours, which means you're done by early afternoon and the rest of the day is still yours.
