An hour's drive from Anchorage along the Seward Highway gets you to Portage, where you board the M/V Ptarmigan—a custom-built sightseeing vessel with a heated indoor cabin and an open-air top deck. The boat is designed to navigate glacial conditions, so you can get close enough to see the towering blue ice wall of Portage Glacier itself. During the one-hour cruise across Portage Lake, you pass floating icebergs and cascading waterfalls tumbling down the steep mountain cliffs on either side.
A U.S. Forest Service ranger provides live narration throughout the cruise, sharing details about the glacier's formation, the wildlife in the area, and the region's history. The ranger's commentary runs in English and is included with your ticket. If conditions align, you may witness calving—chunks of ice breaking away from the glacier face and falling into the lake—which produces both a visible and audible event. Bring binoculars or a camera to capture the details; the open-air deck and cabin windows both offer vantage points depending on weather and your preference.
The cruise operates daily from mid-May through mid-September, with five departure times each day so you can fit it into your schedule. The boat is wheelchair accessible, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller (infants must sit on an adult's lap during the cruise). Children under 12 need to be accompanied by an adult. Food and beverages are available for purchase onboard. Cancellations made at least 24 hours before your departure receive a full refund.
