The experience
The day starts with a pickup or a meeting spot on the river, where your guide fits you with waders, boots and a rod. The walk to the water takes anywhere from five to thirty minutes depending on where the fish are and how to avoid crowds. Your guide begins by explaining what fish eat, where they hold in the current, and what insects are hatching, then moves into casting instruction, starting from the basics for new anglers or refining technique for experienced ones. The guide teaches how to cast to a fish, present the fly so it looks natural, set the hook and release the catch safely.
You won't stay in one spot all day. The guide moves you between different sections of water to make the most of your time and show you as much as the river holds. A half-day trip fishes straight through until around 2pm with snacks and bottled water provided. A full-day trip breaks for lunch around noon, then returns to the water. Every trip is built around the conditions on the day you fish (weather, water flow, what's hatching and how active the fish are), so the route and the focus shift to give you the best chance at a good day.
All gear is provided: rods, reels, waders, boots and flies. The guide handles the details of where to fish and how to fish it. If you have a special request (a longer hike to escape other anglers, a custom lunch, a friendly tournament for a group), the guide works to make it happen.
