The experience
I was already fumbling with the snowshoes when our guide, Jamie, grinned and handed me the poles: apparently I’d put one on backwards. The van had dropped us at this trailhead just outside Park City, and the air felt sharp enough to wake up every cell in my body. There was this kind of hush under the trees. Just the crunch of our steps and the occasional caw from some bird I couldn’t name. Jamie pointed out a set of rabbit tracks zigzagging ahead. I tried to keep up but mostly just kept looking around at all that white.
We stopped at a ridge where everything opened up: mountains rolling away under a sky that looked almost too blue. I remember pulling off my glove for a snack (granola bar, nothing fancy) and feeling how cold the metal pole had gotten. Jamie told us stories about growing up in Utah, how she still gets surprised by moose sometimes out here. My friend tried to pronounce “Wasatch” right: Jamie laughed but didn’t correct her. It’s weirdly peaceful walking through snow like that. You start noticing little things, like how pine needles smell stronger when it’s cold.
I didn’t expect the sled ride at the end to be such a rush: felt like being ten again, flying down this bumpy path with snow spraying everywhere. We were all out of breath by the time we reached the bottom, laughing so hard I nearly lost my hat. The whole thing took about two hours but honestly it felt longer: in a good way. There’s something about moving slow through those forests that sticks with you after. Still thinking about that view from the ridge sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
