The Experience

I didn’t expect to start my day in Palm Springs with Miss Anita Doll tossing out jokes about Frank Sinatra’s pool—apparently it’s shaped like a grand piano, which is just so… Sinatra, right? We climbed into this tricked-out little theater bus (stadium seats, big window—felt like being in a moving movie set) and suddenly the city looked different. Anita was all sequins and sass but also knew her stuff; she pointed out Twin Palms Estate and dropped these weirdly specific stories about old Hollywood drama. I could actually smell the desert air sneaking in whenever the door opened at stops—dry, kind of sweet, almost like warm stone after rain.

We rolled past Elvis’ Honeymoon Hideaway (Anita called it “the King’s love shack”—she winked at us through her lashes) and then slowed for the Walk of Stars. There was this moment when she sang a few bars from an old tune as we passed Marilyn Monroe’s star—I don’t even like musicals but it just fit. The video clips on board were hilarious and sometimes a little touching; seeing those drone shots of Mt. San Jacinto State Park made me want to get off and hike, but honestly I was too busy laughing at Anita’s commentary to care much about missing the fresh air.
