The experience
All sessions take place on Saguaro Lake at the Butcher Jones Recreation Site, where the water stays calm enough for beginners and the wildlife viewing ranks among the best in the Southwest. A certified guide walks you through the mechanics of launching and landing your board, then moves into techniques for balancing, kneeling and standing, and how to turn and navigate. The lake's water temperature ranges from the 60s in winter to the low 80s in summer, so swimming is possible year-round, though January water can be chilly.
The guide covers more than technique: you'll learn about the desert lake ecosystem and spot the flora and fauna that make Saguaro Lake a unique habitat. Tours run about 2 hours and operate Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, with start times varying based on water traffic that day. The operator transports all equipment to and from the lake and provides bottled water and snacks throughout.
