The experience

The day starts at KP Hole Park, which sits directly on the Rainbow River and serves as the launch point. You get a kayak, life jacket, dry bag and paddles. Everything needed to paddle upriver on your own. A live guide leads the group through the route and points out wildlife along the way.

Paddling upriver takes you to Indian Creek first, about 20 minutes in. The creek is only 3 feet deep and narrow, with glass-clear water and bubbling springs visible from the kayak. You stop here to float and soak in the spring garden feel before continuing. Another 40 minutes upriver opens onto the Rainbow River itself, where the water turns vibrant aqua-blue, the lagoon widens, and you're more likely to spot turtles, otters, fish and birds. There's no fixed schedule once you're out there. You explore at your own pace.

The return is the easiest part. You simply relax and let the gentle current carry you back downstream to KP Hole Park, so the paddle back requires almost no effort. If you want to add snorkeling, you can choose that option at checkout and bring underwater gear into the clearest parts of the river.
