Walk the intertidal zone and hike through giant trees with a naturalist guide

A full-day small group tour of Olympic National Park with a naturalist guide, park entry, and private transportation to Kalaloch beaches, the Hoh rainforest, and your choice of stops or a longer hike. Groups stay under eight hikers. Your guide (trained in natural history, geology, and the region's human past) leads either a series of short explorations (tidepool viewing, the 1,000-year-old Tree of Life, Hall of Mosses) or an approximate 4-mile hike along the Hoh River Trail through Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, and Western Hemlock. The tour runs 6 to 8 hours and includes snacks and beverages. Bring your own lunch for a picnic your guide will help you place.

  • Hike to Sol Duc Falls (1.6 miles round trip)

The experience

The day starts or ends at Rialto Beach depending on the tide, where your guide walks you through the intertidal zone to show you starfish, anemones, and the small universe most people miss. From there, the group chooses its own path: either a series of shorter stops, the Hall of Mosses, Sol Duc Falls (a 1.6-mile round trip), and the Tree of Life, or a longer 4-mile hike along the Hoh River Trail, where you move slowly enough to notice the thousands of species around you and ask your guide about why this ecosystem is one of a kind.

Your guide is a naturalist trained in botany, geology, and natural history, and will explain the logging industry's mark on the forest, share stories of the Hoh tribe, and answer questions as you walk. The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats the whole group. Park entry and transportation are included. Bring a lunch to eat at a spot your guide picks, and pack any snacks or drinks you prefer beyond what the tour provides.

The group caps at eight hikers. If the tour doesn't fill to the minimum, you'll have the option to book it as a private tour for an additional charge or receive a full refund.

Is this one for you?The 6- to 8-hour commitment means you'll see both the coast and the rainforest in a single day, but you'll need to plan the rest of your schedule around it. If you want to explore Olympic's highlights without driving yourself or choosing between the beach and the forest, this tour covers both. If you prefer a shorter outing or more flexibility with your afternoon, a half-day option would suit you better.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the difference between the short stops and the longer hike on this tour?

Your group decides on the day. The short-stops option includes the Hall of Mosses, tidepool viewing at Rialto Beach, Sol Duc Falls (1.6 miles round trip), and the Tree of Life. The longer option is an approximate 4-mile hike along the Hoh River Trail through old growth forest, where the pace is slower so you can observe the ecosystem in detail.

Do I need to be very fit to do the 4-mile hike?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The hike involves moderate elevation changes and a 4-mile distance, so you should be comfortable with a moderate walk to get the most out of it, but the pace is set by the group and the guide.

What animals or plants will I actually see on the Hoh River Trail?

The trail winds through Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, and Western Hemlock trees. Your guide will point out the flora and fauna specific to this ecosystem and explain why the area is unique, but what you see depends on the season and the day.

Is lunch included, or do I need to bring my own?

Bring your own lunch. The tour includes snacks and a selection of beverages, and your guide will choose a scenic spot for you to eat together.

How long is this tour, and what time does it start?

The tour runs 6 to 8 hours. The start time depends on the tide schedule for Rialto Beach, which your guide will confirm when you book.
