Summary

Whitewater thrills on the Ocoee with real guides and wild rapids

You’ll paddle through roaring rapids on the Middle Ocoee River with an expert guide leading your crew. Feel the cold splash at Grumpy’s, catch your breath swimming mid-river, and share laughs as you tackle each rapid together. It’s not just adrenaline—you’ll leave with muddy shoes and stories you’ll want to retell.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to laugh so much at 9am, but there we were—standing in our slightly-too-big helmets, eyeing the Ocoee River while our guide Jamie grinned like she knew something we didn’t. The Cherokee National Forest was all green and buzzing, and honestly, I was more nervous than I let on. Jamie ran us through the safety stuff (she called it “the fun talk”), then tossed out a few river stories that made me feel like maybe I could handle this after all.

The first rapid—Grumpy’s—hit harder than my morning coffee. Cold water slapped my face and someone behind me whooped so loud it echoed off the rocks. I remember gripping my paddle too tight at Broken Nose, but by Table Saw I’d loosened up. There’s this weird mix of fear and excitement when you’re barreling down class III and IV rapids for five miles straight—my arms ached, but it felt good. Somewhere around Hell’s Hole, Jamie yelled “lean in!” and we all did, laughing because none of us really knew what we were doing but somehow it worked.

Halfway down, we stopped to swim. The water was colder than I expected—shocking at first, then kind of perfect once you let go. Someone tried to skip a rock (failed), another just floated quietly staring up at the sky. It smelled like wet leaves and river stones; I still think about that part sometimes—how peaceful it got after all that noise.

Back at the outpost, we peeled off soaked life vests and checked out photos (I look ridiculous in every single one). If you’re looking for a day trip from Chattanooga or want to try whitewater rafting near the Ocoee Dam No. 2, this is it. Just bring dry clothes—and maybe don’t overthink your helmet hair.
